CAPITAL CONSTRUCTION
Capital Construction & University Art Committee | University of Oregon
While working at Capital Construction at the University of Oregon, I served as a Design Assistant and was the sole student representative on the University Art Committee. In my role at Capital Construction, I supported campus projects by creating FF&E schedules, preparing detailed job-site meeting notes, and coordinating signage across multiple university buildings.
As part of the University Art Committee, I gained hands-on experience evaluating public art for new campus developments, assessing artwork not only for its aesthetic value but also for its ability to create a meaningful connection between the space and the people using it. This process involved reviewing the dimensions of proposed installations, measuring site-specific areas, and ensuring each piece was appropriately scaled and complementary to its surroundings.
I played an active role in advocating for selections that reflected the needs and voices of future residents while remaining mindful of the university’s budget. Interviewing professional artists—many of whom were significantly more experienced—was a valuable learning opportunity that strengthened my confidence, communication skills, and decision-making throughout the process.
A GLIMPSE INTO THE WORK: Art Locations
As part of the artist selection process, a committee member created a detailed diagram outlining the proposed locations for each potential art installation (see below). I contributed to reviewing and assessing these proposed sites to help determine whether they were appropriate for the intended artworks. This step was essential in guiding our decisions on which artists to select and where their work would be installed within the new residential building.
